As men, we’ve all asked ourselves the important questions about feminism — Can women be cockblocked? Should men get paternity leave? Should women be allowed to compete in mixed martial arts? However, there’s one lingering question that keeps us up at night — Can men be mansplained to?
Mansplaining has traditionally been used to describe situations where a man explains something to a woman, often times, something she already knows. Essentially, he’s talking down to her. But what happens when a man talks down to another man? Is that no longer mansplaining just because a man is on the receiving end from another man? Furthermore, are we going to just assume their genders?
Every day millions of men are the victims of mansplaining. I’ve seen it again and again. Whether it’s your boss, your best friend, a coworker, or an acquaintance — men aggressively assault each other with explanations all the time. Until we identify this as a serious problem, we cannot begin to identify a solution. No one should have to listen to another man frothing at the mouth as he explains why his fantasy football team is better than yours or why Kobe is better than Lebron. It’s time to raise awareness for this very real, very painful experience. When one of us suffers, we all suffer. Post your stories of men being mansplained to on your social media with the hashtag #MenBeingMansplainedTo. We can get beyond this together.
