SEATTLE — Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos vowed that the online shipping juggernaut would only hand over its users’ purchasing habits to the government upon request from now on. The company will no longer supply the government with monthly updates on all of its users’ transactions.
“In the information age, we want anyone using Amazon to know that their privacy is a priority to us. With that being said, we will no longer be regularly updating the government with your purchasing histories and the personality profiles we construct of you based on your behavior on the site,” said Bezos.
Bezos went on to say that without the personality profiles it has been providing, authorities will no longer have the means to accurately predict future crimes, thereby also reducing preemptive arrests — an announcement that caused many to breathe a sigh of relief.
